Curriculum
Arts, Health and Physical Education
Arts Alive
A four week summer experience for talented high school students of the arts and educators, this program includes opportunities in the visual and performing arts. Authentic assessment, high school/college collaboration, current applications to state regulations, and professional artists as partners are primary components of Arts Alive. This is a Pennsylvania Council of the Arts (PCA) partnership program.
Arts in Education Advisory Board
This advisory board assists NEIU in maintaining and developing substantive arts in education programming and recommends ways in which NEIU can work with the community at large.
Arts Standards Seminars
Art, music, dance and theater staff development is conducted for all teachers on the national and state standards for the arts. Presentations by professional artists from the community highlight this program. Most importantly, connections are suggested as to how districts can comply with arts requirements K-12 with cost effective and efficient options.
Arts in Education Alliance
An advisory committee of more than 30 local community arts organizations representing several counties helps to provide opportunities in arts for all students.
Artists in Residence
This program provides residencies with grant monies from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts (PCA). A regional roster of professional artists is available for the schools to utilize in the selection process.
Artist/Teacher Training Team
NEIU has an artist-teacher training team that presents Arts in Education (AIE) professional development to educators at local and state level conferences and in the districts.
ASCD Website
NEIU maintains the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) website for the Arts in Education Network of ASCD.
Gallery Gatherings
NEIU sponsors a program for area teachers and students to visit galleries for Arts in Education (AIE) programming.
Living Arts
School districts, educators select from a comprehensive list of professional artists to perform in the districts. A formal brochure with offerings and curricular connections is published each spring to facilitate the selection process. This is a partnership program with NEIU and the districts.
Mulberry Poets and Writers Competition
NEIU partners to sponsor this contest for young writers and hosts a reading and workshop as a culminating activity.
Museum and Cultural Institution Collaboration
This program connects educators with regional museums to develop appropriate curriculum for museum collections. Guides are created and disseminated to all area educators to utilize with students as pre, during and post visit lessons.
Northeastern PA Philharmonic Young People's Concerts
NEIU and the orchestra collaborate to present concerts for students in grade 3, 4, and 5 at the Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre and the Cultural Center in Scranton. A world renowned children's conductor and a composer present the interactive concert. Student activity books and CDs are available.
Traveling Trunks
NEIU and five area museums collaborated to produce trunks filled with artifacts from the museums. The trunks are borrowed by teachers in 31 school districts in the region. A curriculum guide is included.
HEAL (Health Education Alliance)
HEAL is a collaborative group of social service agencies and health organizations that provide curriculum services to schools and the community.
Safe and Drug Free Grant Consortium
Since 1999, NEIU provides leadership to seventeen school districts, two career technology centers and the NEIU Learning Center in the Safe and Drug Free Grant Consortium. The funding from this grant provides school districts with opportunities to purchase security equipment and to conduct needs assessments relating to the security and safety of school buildings. Districts also have opportunities to update Safe School's Memorandum of Understanding with local and state law enforcement as well as update their Crisis Response Manuals. PEMA (Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency), law enforcement and county emergency management are available to assist in the development of a district's Multi-Hazard Plan within a school community.
Drivers Education and Service Learning
Driver Education Network
This initiative supports the NEIU driver education programs. These programs for both driver education teachers and students include the PA DUI Association/PA SADD Safety Bug and the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association's Safe Driving Competition.
Educational Technology
Access PA Consortium
This network works collaboratively with public, academic, and school libraries to participate in activities involving resource sharing, exchange of innovative ideas, development of network collection procedures, and program building for future needs. NEIU coordinates correspondence and interaction for the group among Commonwealth Libraries, the Access Database Support Staff, and all members of the group.
E-Tech Plan
This network partners with other professionals within NEIU to develop a long-term technology plan that will enhance student learning and achievement, realize efficiencies in administration and management, and increase communications and access to information in our schools and communities. This planning process focuses on addressing identified goals and objectives that reflect NEIU's mission, exploration of technological options, professional development and technology staff requirements.
Electronic Surveys
The Network of Teaching and Learning with Primary Resources works directly with school districts interested in collecting data that will inform the decision-making processes within the educational system. Through in-house consultation, NEIU designs and administers electronic surveys for a variety of topics and criteria. Additionally, we generate both statistical and graphic reports, in order to summarize data findings that lead to providing support for meaningful change in the curricular, financial, or community-minded areas of education.
Media Resource Library
NEIU offers a lending library of electronic resources and printed materials aimed at supporting a standards-based curriculum. Currently, this library consists of videotapes, laser discs, fastbacks, educational web sites, referenced to academic standards. All materials are aligned with the PA Academic Standards. Computer software will be added which will enable learners, K-adult, to develop research/information processing skills across all curricular areas.
Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair
In an ongoing effort to promote technology use in our districts, the NEIU sponsors an Annual Regional Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair.

Students from school districts, all over the state, participate in this annual event that highlights Pennsylvania high schools students' application skills and computer knowledge. Winners at the local level will move to the state competition at Dickinson College.

Students can create projects in eight categories. The categories are Animation; Computer Fair Logo; Curriculum-Based Web Page Design; Digital Movie; Graphic Design; Information-Based Web Page Design, Multimedia Presentations; and Desktop Publishing. Representing Northeastern Pennsylvania businesses and educational institutions the projects will be judged by a panel of computer professionals. Prizes will be awarded to the students of the top three projects in each category. The top prizewinner in each category will move on to the state competition.

Technology Center for Information/Service
In order to provide effective operation of a wide area network, NEIU works with area school districts in an effort to maintain open communication regarding the latest technology available, system configurations, hardware/software upgrades, and on site consultations. These same services are offered in support of local area networks. NEIU maintains a number of servers that provide e-mail, web site hosting, web content filtering, and domain name services.
Equipment on Loan
In an effort to support technology integration into curriculum, NEIU has developed the Equipment on Loan program. Technology trunks containing a laptop, projector, and smart board, are available to teachers on a monthly loan basis. Teachers are required to attend a half-day workshop before being eligible to borrow a trunk.
Technology Workshops
New technologies are quickly emerging in education. Educators need to be aware of these technologies and have a basic understanding of how to use them. These workshops focus on hardware and software and their classroom applications.
Language Arts
Early Reading Initiative
Training and technical assistance is provided in the area of early reading so that early intervention staff can provide direct, explicit, systematic instruction in language and reading activities based on scientifically based research that support the age appropriate development of language and literacy skills.
PSSA
Technical assistance is provided to districts concerning the interpretation of the PDE report of student performance on the PSSA in reading, writing, and mathematics. Suggestions are made to administrators concerning the curricular implication of the results; and how to utilize the results as a part of an internal needs assessment as they prepare the districts strategic plan. Periodically, staff development seminars are conducted regarding the development of open-ended responses typically used in the PSSA.
Process Writing
NEIU offers a number of staff development programs in process writing. Process writing is a state-of-the art approach to teaching and learning in concert with current trends for restructuring schools. Support for writing, within the districts has been conducted at the Intermediate Unit, in school buildings, and classrooms by personnel from this network. Local and national consultants provide resources to the school districts. Support for this program comes from the Pennsylvania Literacy Framework (PLF).
Writing Assessment for Elementary and Secondary Teachers
NEIU, in cooperation with the PLF Advisory Committee, gives on-site technical assistance to school districts. Presenters give overviews concerning how to write prompts for narrative, informational, and persuasive writing; how to score student papers using the domain scoring guide; how to use effective classroom strategies to develop students' writing abilities. In follow-up sessions, teachers, using their own students work, participate in scoring sessions designed to develop inter-rater reliability.
Math, Science and Environment
PSSA

NASA Endeavour Space Forum
This program is conducted through collaboration with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The program brings together middle school educators and students, as well as professionals from NASA. The program incorporates videoconferencing, as well as on-sight visits. Students participate in the program for two years, working with inter-district teams to solve "real-life" problems encountered by NASA scientists, engineers, and technicians.
NASA Urban Project
This program is for schools classified as urban by NASA. The program provides educators the opportunity to work directly with NASA scientists at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Educators attend a two-week summer institute on-site to develop K-12 teaching strategies for a scientific topic. The educators work with professionals from NASA to develop all facets of the program. During the school year, NEIU and NASA provide ongoing staff development and technical assistance.
STARLAB Portable Planetarium System
 School districts have the opportunity to utilize the STARLAB portable planetarium system within their own buildings. The system provides a curriculum that allows astronomy to be integrated into all subject areas. Educators in grades K-12, as well as school district programs involving the community may utilize the STARLAB. NEIU provides staff development on the physical aspects of the program, as well as curriculum issues regarding assessment and instructional strategies
Social Studies, ESL and Foreign Language
Heritage Express
NEIU, Steamtown, the Lackawanna Historical Society and the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (LHVA) coordinate a special train trip for students to learn regional history as they travel through towns of the region.
Geography Alliance
Staff development by state and national consultants is provided on a regular basis. NEIU disseminates Geography Week Awareness packets and Geography Alliance materials to teachers.
Geography Grant
NEIU has been awarded a Geography Grosvenor Grant for the teaching of geography in K-12 schools.

Social Studies Network

NEIU provides professional development regarding each of the four curricular areas of social studies: geography, civics and government, history and economics. Twice a year a dinner meeting is held to update members on state and federal initiatives regarding curriculum and instruction as well as topics related to social studies issues.
Junior Achievement (JA) of Northeastern PA
Through NEIU, JA provides elementary, middle and high school economics teaching and learning programs. JA is another option for districts to consider regarding teaching and learning effectiveness as well as compliance with Chapter 4 curriculum regulations. The Junior Achievement program provides interdisciplinary content aligned with PA Academic Standards.
English as a Second Language
NIEIU provides staff development to teachers responsible for delivering planned instruction to English Language Learners (ELLs). In addition NEIU provides staff development concerning policy, curriculum development, and state and federal regulations. Recently, an ESL consortium of eight districts was formed to deliver ESL services to students who have been identified as ELLs.
